25 Cheap Destinations For 2024 With Great Weather in April

April is a great in-between month for traveling since the weather is really nice in many places with scorching summers and it’s still nice in most of South America and other Southern Hemisphere destinations. Better still, April tends to be a ‘shoulder season’ month in most places for hotel rates so you can get great deals almost everywhere because crowds are smaller.

Strange as it may seem, April is actually the hottest month of the year in most of southeast Asia including Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City, so it’s probably better to avoid that famous backpacker zone until autumn or at least until the rains start in June to cool things off a bit more.

Easter 2024 is March 31. Since Easter (for most people who celebrate Easter) falls on March 31 in 2024, you can expect the week leading up to that to be more crowded and expensive in most destinations near Catholics (such as southern Europe and Latin America), as well as many beach resorts in the Tropics all around the world. The week after Easter can also be busy so it’s worth taking into account, especially in countries like Italy and Spain.

Video showing the best places mentioned in the article below

One photo and some text can only show you so much so I recently started making videos of my most popular articles including this one. Below is a video with highlights of the best places to visit in March and April.

The Americas

April is an in-between month in the Americas except of course for the Tropics, where it’s hot all year round. This is an excellent time to head to the Caribbean, as the crowds are thinning and prices are coming down after winter.

The Caribbean

April can be a perfect month for a Caribbean vacation because the weather will still be dry and perfect, while the crowds will be smaller and hotel rates much lower than from Christmas through late March. April is also safely out of the hurricane season, so you can go anywhere you want without even considering the possibility of a storm.

Cancun, Mexico

  • April avg high: 89°F/32°C
  • April avg low: 74°F/23°C
  • April avg precip: 1.5″/3.8cm

April in the Cancun area, which also includes Playa del Carmen and the island of Cozumel, is starting to warm up, but at least it’s dry and the ocean breezes are always pleasant. Most of the snowbirds that come to Cancun are already back home by April, so room rates can be very appealing in spite of the perfect weather.

With a boom in new hotels and resorts, the greater Cancun area has been getting better with more choices than ever before. In fact, we wrote a separate post helping you choose where to stay in the Cancun area because there are 9 distinct areas that can be perfect or not-great depending on your budget and goals. It’s worth noting that the cheapest hotels in Cancun are mainly clustered in the downtown area, which has great shopping and nightlife, but isn’t convenient for those who like to spend each day on the beach. Still, there are some really nice hotels off the beach and most have resort-style pools and all have the same weather as the beach resorts. We are including all-inclusive prices starting for 2024 because so many people are interested in them and deals in April are good.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$54 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$118 per night for two people
  • All-inclusive hotels from: US$216 per night for two people

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

  • April avg high: 86°F/30°C
  • April avg low: 74°F/23°C
  • April avg precip: 1.1″/2.8cm

If you are thinking about doing an all-inclusive holiday in April, then Punta Cana is the place to be. The room rates from Christmas through March are quite good considering the high quality of the resorts here, but starting in April the rates go down and the value is amazing. They have many very affordable all-inclusive resorts and they also have one of the best luxury all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, so it’s the whole range.

The white, sandy beaches in this area are lined with huge resorts, nearly all run by European resort chains, and they compete fiercely on price during the non-peak months. In other words, you can get an all-inclusive room at a well-reviewed 4-star beach resort in Punta Cana for under US$200 per night for two people. The room itself will feel worth the nightly rate, so the unlimited food and alcoholic drinks seem like a bonus. And unlike many other parts of the Caribbean, the Punta Cana area feels very safe and well organized. From the newish airport to the new roads leading to the resort districts, it feels like the government takes tourism seriously and they welcome guests with open arms. As with many other places in the Caribbean, there can be a huge difference between a family-run 3-star hotel off the beach and a chain resort 4-star hotel on the beach, and the room rates reflect this. In other words, don’t expect too much if you book something under US$100 per night, but if you don’t like huge hotels you can still get great value in that 3-star category.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$53 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$89 per night for two people
  • All-inclusive hotels from: US$254 per night for two people

Montego Bay, Jamaica

  • April avg high: 87°F/31°C
  • April avg low: 73°F/23°C
  • April avg precip: 1.3″/3.3cm

Jamaica is closer to the US and Canada than Punta Cana is, so flights into the large and busy Montego Airport are shorter and often cheaper as well. Another small bonus is that everyone you encounter in Jamaica will speak English, which definitely isn’t true in the Dominican Republic or much of the rest of the Caribbean. Montego Bay is home to quite a few top resorts, including many all-inclusives and several Sandals resorts including two that have overwater bungalows. The town itself is kind of a dud, so this destination is best for those who want to book and stay in a large self-contained resort.

If Montego Bay itself doesn’t sound perfect then you might instead consider Negril or Ocho Rios, both of which are about 90 minutes from the same airport and each has a different feel. Ocho Rios is similar to Montego Bay (also with a dud of a main town), and there are many great resorts all along the northern coast. Negril, on the other hand, is the place to go if you want to stay in a smaller beach hotel where you can try different restaurants and bars rather than being stuck in one big place. One great advantage of Jamaica is that it’s reasonably close to the United States so flights are usually hours shorter in each direction. The island also has at least one popular entry on our new list of the best Caribbean resorts for families with kids.

It’s worth noting that there is a HUGE difference between 3-star and 4-star hotels in Jamaica. Many of the “3-star” hotels are small, family-run places that can start around US$100 per night for two people, often a couple blocks from the beach. Nearly all of the “4-star” hotels are large resorts on the beach that are operated by major chains and usually all-inclusive. They also provide great value (especially the all-inclusive places), but it’s important to set your expectations properly and realize why there is a such a large price difference. As of 2024 we are noticing that nearly all of the cheaper Jamaican resorts are getting poor reviews so be careful before booking a place with few or bad reviews yourself.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$84 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$195 per night for two people
  • All-inclusive hotels from: US$328 per night for two people

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

  • April avg high: 86°F/30°C
  • April avg low: 63°F/17°C
  • April avg precip: 0.1″/0.3cm

The popular Caribbean destinations above are ideal for those starting in Europe or the eastern half of the US or Canada, but those in the western half of the US or Canada will find it cheaper and faster to reach Puerto Vallarta, which is also a fantastic destination on its own. Unlike some of the others, Puerto Vallarta is a historic town with authentic architecture at its core, and then resorts built around it. This gives it a far more authentic and interesting feel compared to Cancun, for example.

You can see above that the April weather in Puerto Vallarta is pretty much perfect, with warm days and mild evenings combined with no rain most years. Hotels here can be expensive if you are looking for a 4-star place on the beach, but there are still good deals to be had. If you are willing to stay in a 3-star place a couple blocks from the beach, Puerto Vallarta is still very cheap. There are large resorts both well north and well south of Puerto Vallarta, so if you want to stay in a self-contained mini-paradise you have scores of great options that are all over the area.

It’s important to take a hotel’s location in mind when booking. If you book a place in the downtown area you’ll have scores of restaurants and bars to choose from in all price ranges. But if you book a beach hotel that isn’t near much else, you might have very few choices aside from the restaurant at the hotel itself. For 2024 we are including rates for all-inclusive resorts as they are becoming more popular. Those rates are lower than you might expect and in many cases lower than in the Cancun area.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$67 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$94 per night for two people
  • All-inclusive hotels from: US$201 per night for two people

Los Cabos, Mexico

  • April avg high: 84°F/29°C
  • April avg low: 60°F/15°C
  • April avg precip: 0.1″/0.1cm

Another great option for those starting in the western half of the US or Canada is Los Cabos, which seems to get more popular each year. This area on the southern tip of Baja California is actually the twin towns of Cabo San Lucas, which is built around a large and gorgeous marina, and San Jose del Cabo, which is new, more spread out, and near the airport.

The April weather is arguably the nicest of the whole year since the days are pleasantly warm and the nights are mild enough that you can spend time outside instead of going from one air conditioned room to another. If you like nightlife and shopping you’ll be happier near Cabo San Lucas, and if you want more room to spread out and you are happy to eat at your hotel’s restaurant most of the time, stay near San Jose del Cabo. And again, there is a big difference between 3-star hotels, which are often small and family-run, and 4-star hotels, which are usually large and on the beach. So book accordingly. There aren’t too many all-inclusive hotels in the Cabo area, but there are some and they can be good value for those who enjoy buffets and booze to go along with their sunbathing.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$87 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$208 per night for two people
  • All-inclusive hotels from: US$258 per night for two people

Mexico City, Mexico

  • April avg high: 80°F/27°C
  • April avg low: 51°F/11°C
  • April avg precip: 1.0″/2.5cm

April is an ideal month to visit Mexico City because it’s one of the two warm and dry months before the summer rainy season begins, so things really don’t get any better all year. You can see just above that the days will be reliably warm while the nights are mild, so it’s an excellent spot for those who don’t want to swelter in the tropics.

Mexico City is massively underrated as a tourist destination, and it’s pleasantly cheap as well. The huge tourist-oriented area in the middle of the city is as impressive as most of the major cities in Europe, and there are excellent cultural sights here as well such as museums and ruins. The nightlife here is also top notch, although it’s easier to join in if you know at least a bit of Spanish. This might be a surprising choice for where to go in April, but almost everyone who comes here loves it and then won’t shut up about it. The hotel star rating doesn’t mean very much in Mexico City so don’t book a 4-star place assuming that it will be luxurious. Reading the reviews closely and being careful about the location are important here.

  • 4-star hotels from: US$73 per night for two people

Ambergris Caye, Belize

  • April avg high: 81°F/27°C
  • April avg low: 76°F/24°C
  • April avg precip: 1.7″/4.3cm

With the rainy season starting in Belize around the middle of May, April is the last month you can reliably go to enjoy the perfect warm and humid weather without a chance of major storms. We list San Pedro on Ambergris Caye on our site, but really Caye Caulker is the island just nearby that is similar yet cheaper so those on a budget should probably head there instead. Especially in recent years, there is a big difference in room rates and types of hotels on each island. If you want something luxurious it’s better to head to San Pedro/Ambergris Cay, but if you are good with something simple on a budget, head to Caye Caulker.

Belize is definitely one of the cheapest Caribbean destinations, and the offshore islands actually do have quite a Caribbean feel in spite of being surrounded by Latin America. There are wonderful resorts here for those willing to spend more, but even the cheaper hotels are decent, and very good bargains even in high season.

  • 4-star hotels from: US$213 per night for two people

Guanacaste, Costa Rica

  • April avg high: 97°F/36°C
  • April avg low: 73°F/23°C
  • April avg precip: 0.9″/2.3cm

Many people come to Costa Rica for zip-lining and other adventure activities, and those visitors are probably better off starting in the capital of San Jose and then going from there. But those who are coming to Costa Rica to enjoy the lovely beaches and stay in nicer resorts will find it much easier to stay in the Guanacaste area on the northern Pacific coast. You can even fly for about the same price directly into the Liberia airport, which is a short drive from the various beach resort areas.

The Guanacaste region has many small beach communities and Tamarindo is one of the most famous of them. You’ll be able to find newer 4-star chain hotels on the beach or up in the hills with even better views, but you can also find cheaper local hotels that are in or near the towns and provide a more authentic experience. The hotel prices listed just below are for the simple places often run by families. It will cost around US$200 per night for a chain hotel on the beach, but that is still very good value all things considered. If you are okay with something simple and more basic you can save a fortune by staying at one of the family-run places in the towns rather than at a chain hotel on the beach.

There are quite a few all-inclusive resorts in this area now so we have listed the starting prices for April of 2024. They go way up from there, but it’s still worth a look as most of them seem to get very good reviews.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$59 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$210 per night for two people
  • All-inclusive hotels from: US$381 per night for two people

Panama City, Panama

  • April avg high: 89°F/32°C
  • April avg low: 78°F/26°C
  • April avg precip: 2.5″/6.3cm

Those looking for a Central American adventure who might not want to pay the higher Costa Rica prices should think about Panama. The capital city is a new hot spot and a legitimate cultural destination that is one of the region’s bright spots, while the beach resorts on both coasts are also well worth considering. Hotels in Panama in April are cheap and it’s easy to find an excellent deal. Even many of the cheaper places have really nice pools, so this can be a great place to relax in the sun on a budget if that’s what you are after.

Prices in Panama are generally very reasonable for the area and things are more modern than in a few of the countries just below Mexico, so it’s a nice compromise. It’ll be hot in April, even at night, but those near the beaches should be fine, and hotel prices are off their high-season peaks as well. If you want to combine a city visit with an interesting beach visit it’s best to head to the San Blas Islands, which are northeast of the capital in the Caribbean. You can book a ride from Panama City to the coast and then a boat-ride to the island where you’ll stay. Room rates for April of 2024 are up since last year, but this place is still get value considering the quality and climate.

Cartagena, Colombia

  • April avg high: 86°F/30°C
  • April avg low: 78°F/26°C
  • April avg precip: 1.0″/2.5cm

Being fairly close to the equator, Cartagena has constant warm temperatures all year round, but the rainy season does begin in May so April is an ideal time to go while it’s still dry. More good news is that the crowds have tailed off from the winter as well so hotel prices are quite low, especially at the high-end beach hotels.

Cartagena is the best value destination in the Caribbean at the moment, with a gorgeous historic walled city and nearby beach resorts that are all surprisingly cheap. The food and drinks here are also bargains, even at many of the posh-looking places, so budget travelers can live like kings and queens here. If you are looking for a warm and cheap place to relax for a week or more, this could be perfect. Hotel rates in April are very low and you can even get a nice place on the beach for under US$100 per night. There are a few all-inclusive resorts here now and rates are very reasonable so that is worth a look as well.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$44 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$70 per night for two people

Lima, Peru

  • April avg high: 76°F/24°C
  • April avg low: 66°F/19°C
  • April avg precip: 0.0″/0.0cm

As long as you don’t require extreme heat, you won’t find a better month to visit Lima. The daytime temperatures are warm and evening temperatures are mild as well, with virtually no chance of rain. Better still, this is the first month of the off-season for hotels, so prices are low and crowds are down. In fact, our check of room rates for April of 2023 show that prices are way down. This could partly be because of the political unrest, so it’s worth checking the news before booking a flight.

Many people visit Lima on their way to Cusco, and this is an ideal month for that town as well, as the rainy season is over and days are still warm. If you want to do the Inca Trail you’ll find it expensive on the train or with a guided tour, but both are very worthwhile anyway.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  • April avg high: 86°F/30°C
  • April avg low: 70°F/21°C
  • April avg precip: 3.9″/9.8cm

Since Carnival is never as late as April you can always count on this being a perfect and cheap month to visit Rio de Janeiro. The high season for hotels is over and yet the weather this month is even nicer than during the summer as there is less rain and temperatures are less scorching.

Being (just barely) in the tropics, it’s beach weather pretty much all year round in Rio, so better to go when it’s not as hot and the city isn’t so full of other tourists. Hotel deals, even along the main Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, are easy to find in April. Brazil has become quite cheap as of 2023 so it could be a great time to visit. Staying safe in Rio isn’t as easy as it is in most other places on this list, so it can be worth it to pay a bit more for a larger hotel with a good reputation. In fact, if this is your first visit to Brazil it’s highly recommended that you book a hotel in the general Copacabana or Ipanema area in the west and near the beach. You can still find good deals in that popular tourist district these days and it’s generally MUCH safer than staying in the downtown center or some other far-flung area with less security.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

  • April avg high: 73°F/23°C
  • April avg low: 57°F/14°C
  • April avg precip: 3.8″/9.5cm

As the weather cools off a bit in Buenos Aires and the crowds from summer are gone, April might be on the borderline when it comes to weather, but this is really a cultural and indoor city anyway, and the whole month is quite pleasant without much rain.

This is also the first month of the off-season for hotels so you’ll be able to get a great deal on just about any hotel you like, especially the 3- and 4-star places that will suddenly find themselves otherwise empty. You’ll be dining and dancing mostly with locals rather than other tourists, which can be quite another nice benefit as well. If you are flying in from a long way you should also consider side trips to the wine region of Mendoza and/or the adventure mountain capital of Bariloche.

It’s worth noting that in 2024 Argentina continues to deal with high inflation and a currency going down. They’ve just elected a new president who is vowing to switch to the US dollar and that would change things quickly, but it will take a while to happen. Visitors who come with crisp US currency can pay half as much for everything, making it all insanely cheap. Research the “blue dollar” to learn how it works before you plan your trip. It’s a crazy and weird situation, but it’s safe and very normal there. You can save an absolute fortune if you are able to bring cash and pay in person rather than in advance on credit cards.

  • 4-star hotels from: US$91 per night for two people

From November through March there are literally no European cities that could qualify as having “great weather,” except for the Canary Islands, mentioned just below. Even in April you won’t find much good weather until the end of the month, and even then it’ll only be in the far south. It’s a great month to visit as long as you don’t mind bringing a light jacket.

If you are thinking about an early sunshine holiday then late April might work in many of Europe’s cheapest beach destinations.

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

  • April avg high: 72°F/22°C
  • April avg low: 61°F/16°C
  • April avg precip: 1.1″/1.5cm

This is really here to represent all of the Canary Islands, which have fairly mild weather all year round. Tenerife is the most popular island for English-speaking visitors and April is yet another nice month in this part of the world, though it’s still a bit too cool to sit on the beach most days.

April is technically part of the high season for Tenerife hotels, yet by this time the crowds are thinning out a bit before they pick back up in summer, so this is a good time to get good deals at some of the more desirable places. Room rates are very low this month, especially for some of the family-run 3-star places. All-inclusive resorts here are a good deal and if your main goal is to have a few drinks and hang out by the pool or on the beach, they might be your best option.

  • 4-star hotels from: €91 per night for two people

April is a good month for the northern and southern parts of Africa, which are where most of the popular destinations are anyway.

Marrakech, Morocco

  • April avg high: 75°F/24°C
  • April avg low: 52°F/11°C
  • April avg precip: 1.5″/3.8cm

April and May are really the perfect months for a little tour of Morocco because the weather is pleasant both day and night, before the scorching days of summer are upon you. Fez tends to be a bit cooler year round and a bit cheaper as well, though April is quite nice during the day and you’ll be fine with a jacket in the evening, just as you would here.

This is still technically part of the high season for hotels in Marrakech, but crowds have thinned out by now and finding deals should be easy. The crowds in the touristy areas are thinning out as well, which can make the whole visit much more pleasant anyway. There are over 2,000 hotels in the Marrakech area and many are outside of the tourist center, so be careful about location when booking.

Cairo, Egypt

  • April avg high: 82°F/28°C
  • April avg low: 57°F/14°C
  • April avg precip: 0.1″/0.3cm

You’ll really never have to worry about rain in Cairo so it’s just a matter of the heat, which is still in check in April but starting in mid May it can become unbearable, so this is the perfect time to come. As long as the political situation allows, Cairo is usually safe and always very cheap.

April is still technically part of the high season for hotels, but it’s at the end of it so it’s easier to find a good deal, especially at one of the fancier places. And until further notice it will likely be easy to get good hotel deals almost anywhere in Cairo. The city is filled with small hotels and many of them haven’t been updated in a long time. Read reviews carefully before booking. In fact, as of 2024 it looks like the best deals on nicer places are in Giza, near the Great Pyramids. Since downtown Cairo is so crowded it is probably a good idea to stay in Giza. If you can afford a hotel overlooking the Nile that could also be a good choice.

Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt

  • April average high: 86°F/30°C
  • April average low: 68°F/20°C
  • April avg precip: 0.0″/0.0cm

Sharm el-Sheikh has been a popular Red Sea resort town for decades and in recent years more and more Europeans have started coming due to the good climate and great deals. This area also has some of the best diving in the world and a lot of water sports and other activities to offer.

In recent years there have been more all-inclusive resorts opening up so we have included the prices for those below for the 2024 season. Not all such resorts include alcohol, but some do including the cheapest one we found for this year. It’s worth considering that Egypt is a somewhat strict Muslim country so it won’t be the same as a boozy trip to Greece or Spain.

Cape Town, South Africa

  • April avg high: 73°F/23°C
  • April avg low: 53°F/12°C

At least until the end of April, Cape Town is nicely warm and dry pretty much every day, so it’s a good time to visit as long as you aren’t specifically coming to sit on the beach. It’s the last month of high season for hotels, though finding a good deal should be easy if you hunt around for online specials.

Most people visit Cape Town as part of a tour of South Africa, otherwise the airfare alone can make it hard to justify, at least this time of year. Starting in May it’ll get cool and rainier so this is really the last good month to visit until November.

Dubai, UAE

  • April avg high: 91°F/33°C
  • April avg low: 69°F/21°C
  • April avg precip: 0.3″/0.8cm

April is the last month until October when Dubai has temperatures that most people consider to be pleasant, so it’s a good month to come and get very good hotel rates for the end of the season. There aren’t many great beaches here, but there are quite a few huge shopping malls with very good prices and plenty of other things to keep guests busy.

Flights to Dubai tend to be cheap from almost anywhere in Europe or Asia, and the public transportation system here is very efficient as well. As a result, Dubai is a very popular destination for a long weekend break from Europe, as it’s so cheap and easy to get in. Hotels are available in all price ranges, and that includes large apartment hotels where you can get a 1-bedroom place with a kitchen for a surprisingly reasonable price. The Go Dubai Card might be helpful for saving money if you are doing the main attractions.

April is a good month to visit many parts of Asia, although some cities like Bangkok, Saigon, and Siem Reap are already too hot during the day for most people. Actually, the hottest countries in April are those in southeast Asia, and they start to cool off again a bit in May (when the wet season slowly begins).

>>>Best April destinations in Asia – This is a longer and more in-depth list that covers even more than the entries below.

Goa, India

  • April avg high: 91°F/33°C
  • April avg low: 78°F/26°C
  • April avg precip: 0.3″/0.8cm

By the time April rolls around it’s getting very hot in Goa, even at night, so booking a place with air conditioning is pretty much essential. Since nearly everyone who comes to this Indian state does so to sit on or near the beach then it’s still very nice with the sea breezes and all that.

The famous Goa party season is totally over after Easter, and barely going at all after February, so you won’t find many DJ parties on the beach, but you will find great deals at nice hotels in towns up and down the coast here. The cheapest places don’t have A/C and even with a ceiling fan it might be hard to sleep in April in Goa. Hotel star ratings don’t mean that much in India so it’s important to read the reviews carefully. Hotels in Goa in April can be extremely cheap, but the very cheapest places are likely to be disappointing so it’s worth booking a place with plenty of great reviews.

Bali, Indonesia

  • April avg high: 87°F/31°C
  • April avg low: 78°F/26°C
  • April avg precip: 3.7″/9.3cm

April is the first somewhat non-rainy month of the year in Bali, but it’s almost on the equator and that means storms come and go quickly so even when they hit they are rarely a problem. This is also the time of year between the dual high seasons, so hotel prices are at or near their lowest of the year.

The prices listed are for Kuta, Bali, which is the backpacker and surfer area that most people will tell you to avoid, but really almost the whole island is this cheap, except for the purpose-built resort area of Nusa Dua. It’s a good idea to stay in several different parts of Bali on the same trip if you can, but watch out for the traffic, which has gotten horrible in recent years. Hotel rates in Kuta Beach are very low in April of 2024, but unless you are a serious backpacker it’s probably worth paying at least US$30 for a better place. You pretty much get what you pay for in Bali when comparing places, so a US$50 room is going to be MUCH nicer than a US$25 room.

Phuket, Thailand

  • April avg high: 92°F/33°C
  • April avg low: 77°F/25°C
  • April avg precip: 4.8″/12.0cm

While April is technically part of the high season for hotels in Phuket, you should really be able to find a very good deal on a beachfront resort this time of year. This is the hottest month of the year here, as it is through most of SE Asia, but at least most people go to Phuket to sit on the beach so it’s bearable. Among the hot countries in April, the beaches in southern Thailand are probably the most pleasant places to be.

Starting in May the skies and open up and really go nuts so you won’t find nice weather here until the middle of November again. Those looking for a late-season beach getaway should get very good value in Phuket this month.

Boracay Island, Philippines

  • April average high: 88°F/31°C
  • April average low: 77°F/25°C
  • April avg precip: 2.4″/6.0cm

If you are looking for a relaxed beach holiday in Tropical Asia in April, then Boracay might be your best bet. This is actually the hottest month of the year in most of this region, but the peak heat doesn’t get here until late May. This month is also not part of the high season so you can get some excellent bargains at nice hotels on or near the beach.

The only tricky part of a Boracay vacation is that it’s somewhat remote so nearly everyone will have to change planes in Manila or Cebu on the way. But once you get here that remoteness pays off because it feels very relaxed and old-school compared to places like Phuket where chain hotels dominate. The main mode of transportation on Boracay is walking along the sandy footpath that separates the beach from the restaurants and hotels, so it’s truly and idyllic little island. It’s worth noting that Boracay Island was closed to tourists for 6 months in the middle of 2018 to repair some infrastructure, so in 2024 it should still be even nicer than before.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$42 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$64 per night for two people

Pokhara, Nepal

  • April avg high: 79°F/26°C
  • April avg low: 55°F/13°C
  • April avg precip: 1.5″/3.8cm

April is the first of the four good weather months each year in Pokhara (the others being May, October, and November) so things actually can get a bit crowded here, especially toward the middle of the month when all the trekkers have based themselves in town for their various journeys nearby. Still, even during high season Pokhara is cheap compared to nearly anywhere else.

There has been a hotel-building boom in Pokhara in the past few years so finding a good deal on a hotel should continue to be relatively easy. Still, as this is one of the busiest months it’s wise to book as far in advance as possible so you’ll have your pick of the good places instead of having to settle for what’s left.

Hanoi, Vietnam

  • April avg high: 80°F/27°C
  • April avg low: 71°F/22°C
  • April avg precip: 3.2″/8.0cm

Hanoi, which is way up north and a bit inland from Vietnam’s coast, is one of the few cities in Southeast Asia where it’s nice in April. Nearly everywhere else is sizzling hot and humid as well, so it’s really best avoided. Hanoi is actually quite nice in April, and of course so is Halong Bay, which is a very popular trip nearby.

You can also go up into the nearby mountains to visit Sapa or other villages near the China border. It’s all very cheap and the crowds are thin in April so you’ll have much of it to yourself. But seriously, avoid Saigon and that area unless you are a fan of heatstroke.

Thanks for pointing that out. We switched from one database system to another and these articles had to be manually copied over. This one obviously had an incorrect edit and it has been fixed. -Roger

I really appreciate your effort for compiling this list. But at the same time, I would like to point out a few things – you say these are cheap destinations – but you have not factored in the cost to reach these destinations. Unless you are going to be there for a month or more, travel costs usually are the highest.
Also, great weather depends on the individual – for many of us 97F is not great weather, it is not even bearable weather – we prefer the 60s or 70s (some, like me prefer it colder in the 50s – I start sweating uncomfortably at 65+ and cannot breathe at 80+). I have friends down south who start shivering at 99 or below. So, I get both sides.
Again, my comment is not meant to demean the article or your efforts, just showing you a different perspective. You don’t have to publish this comment if you don’t want to. Just thought I would share my thoughts with you. Happy travels.

I appreciate your perspective and I agree with you on most of it. The reason I wrote this series of articles is that many other travel websites try to get the visitor to fill out a form with all of their preferences, budget, and starting point, and then the website would usually recommend the most obvious results. In my experience people prefer something more simple so I list all of the major destinations around the world that are good for each month, including the weather and price ranges, and visitors can scan the whole list in a minute or two.

I tried to include only spots that have warm (and not scorching) weather that are mostly sunny without much rain that month. And I include places from all around the world, so most people will be reasonably close to at least a few of them. Again, thanks for your comments and I appreciate that you took the time to give your feedback. -Roger

Hi Roger, You ask for more suggestions to the Middle East.. Despite what is in the news (which tend to be the worst case scenarios), what amout Oman (not been there personnaly, but know several who has), and Abu Dhabi? Abu Dhabi is a great place to visit, lots of history, welcoming people, nice weather..and..Cheaper than Dubai!!!

    1. Roger Wade says:

      Frequent Traveller,

I’ve yet to make it to Oman for anything more than a plane change myself, and I would like to include it if I can in the future.

I’m also a big fan of Abu Dhabi and there are things that I prefer about it compared to Dubai. We actually have a page for Abu Dhabi, but I don’t include it on the “cheap destinations” lists because, unlike Dubai, there are no cheap hotels. Food and most other things there are similar in price to Dubai, and I’ve had some great meals there for around US$5, but unless things have changed very recently, there are no hotels in the city starting under about US$100 for a low-rated place. Dubai, as you probably know, has some decent hotels starting under US$50 per night. Thanks for the comments. -Roger
