13 Cheap and Warm Beach Destinations for December

All-inclusive resorts can offer excellent value for a December vacation, particularly for travelers who want to know most of their costs before leaving home. Accommodation, meals, alcoholic drinks, activities, and evening entertainment are generally included in one price, although the quality and selection can vary considerably from one resort to another.

The three destinations below have the largest and most varied selections of affordable all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean region. Cancún offers the broadest range of hotels and convenient air connections, Punta Cana specializes in enormous resort complexes with extensive facilities, and Puerto Plata stands out for exceptionally low prices. Each has different strengths, so the best choice will depend on whether you prioritize beaches, resort amenities, reviews, or the lowest possible rate.

Cancún is an excellent starting point for travelers planning their first all-inclusive vacation. It has an enormous selection of resorts, well-developed tourism infrastructure, beautiful Caribbean beaches, and one of the region’s busiest international airports. Nonstop flights arrive from major cities across the United States, Canada, and Europe, making Cancún easier to reach than many competing beach destinations.

Including the Riviera Maya, which extends south from Cancún toward Playa del Carmen and Tulum, travelers can choose from around 200 all-inclusive resorts. The selection ranges from affordable family properties to adults-only hotels and sprawling luxury complexes. With so many choices, visitors can usually find a resort that matches their preferred atmosphere, amenities, and budget.

Cancún also has countless conventional hotels without all-inclusive meal and drink packages. These can be a better value for travelers who don’t consume much alcohol or who plan to spend their days exploring and eating at local restaurants. When comparing rates, consider how many meals and drinks you would realistically purchase at the resort rather than assuming that an all-inclusive package is automatically the better deal.

One appealing early-December example is the Occidental Costa Cancún in the famous Hotel Zone. A seven-night stay was available for $1,690, equivalent to approximately $241 per night for two people. That price included taxes, meals, and alcoholic drinks. Rates around Christmas were approximately twice as high, which illustrates the substantial savings available to travelers who can visit earlier in December.

Punta Cana sits on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic and has around 100 all-inclusive resorts. Like Cancún, it is a purpose-built vacation area that has developed rapidly during the past several decades. The biggest difference is scale: Punta Cana is dominated by enormous resort complexes, some containing multiple hotels and nearly 2,000 rooms spread across extensive grounds.

A single complex may include a family-oriented hotel with kids’ clubs and water parks, an adults-only section, and a more luxurious property sharing many of the same facilities. Some resorts are so large that trams shuttle guests between the beach, pools, restaurants, entertainment venues, and different accommodation areas.

This makes Punta Cana particularly appealing to families and multigenerational groups. One person can spend the day at the beach, another can join organized activities, and younger travelers can use the water park or kids’ club. Many resorts also provide evening shows, live music, and nightclubs, allowing guests with very different interests to enjoy the same vacation without leaving the property.

The Occidental Punta Cana demonstrates how affordable these large resorts can be before the holiday rush. A seven-night stay in early December was available for $1,337—or approximately $191 per night for two people—including taxes, meals, and alcoholic drinks. As in Cancún, prices during the final week of December can be roughly twice as high, so travelers with flexible dates can save substantially by visiting earlier in the month.

Puerto Plata is an established resort area on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic—and by far the least expensive of these three all-inclusive destinations. It doesn’t have the enormous concentration of modern resorts found in Punta Cana, but its much lower prices make it an appealing option for travelers working with limited budgets.

The contrast with Punta Cana is noticeable. Most all-inclusive resorts around Puerto Plata are older and smaller, and average guest-review scores tend to be lower. Those differences help explain the cheaper rates, so travelers should study recent reviews and resort photos carefully rather than choosing a property based entirely on price.

For the right traveler, however, Puerto Plata can provide exceptional value. Its resorts still generally include meals, alcoholic drinks, pools, beach access, and organized activities. Someone who wants an uncomplicated week in warm weather may happily accept an older room or fewer restaurants in exchange for spending hundreds of dollars less.

Playabachata is an example I have mentioned in previous videos, and several viewers have reported enjoying their stays and considering it very good for the price. A seven-night stay in early December was available for only $783—approximately $112 per night for two people—including taxes, meals, and alcoholic drinks. The reviews are good rather than exceptional, but at that rate, Puerto Plata can make an all-inclusive Caribbean vacation possible for travelers who might otherwise remain at home.

Not every traveler wants to spend an entire vacation inside a large resort complex. Smaller hotels can make it easier to explore independently, eat at local restaurants, meet other travelers, and experience more of the surrounding destination. They can also be considerably less expensive than full-service beachfront resorts, particularly for visitors who don’t need every meal and activity included.

The next five choices offer warm December weather, affordable independent hotels, and plenty to do beyond the property. Some have walkable town centers filled with restaurants and nightlife, while others provide laid-back island communities, excellent snorkeling, surfing, or distinctive local culture. They require a little more independence than an all-inclusive vacation, but they can deliver a more varied and memorable experience.

Playa del Carmen and Tulum are both located south of Cancún along Mexico’s Caribbean coast, but they offer very different experiences. Both are good choices for travelers who prefer independent hotels and local restaurants to large all-inclusive resorts.

Playa del Carmen began as a fishing village and has developed into a lively, highly walkable destination. Its downtown area sits just off the beach and is filled with restaurants, bars, shops, and small hotels. The beach may not be quite as impressive as Cancún’s famous Hotel Zone, but many properties have pools, and visitors can choose from numerous water activities and day trips.

Farther south, Tulum is smaller, trendier, and more spread out. Its inland town center is separate from the strip of boutique hotels and restaurants along the beach. Tulum is particularly popular with younger travelers and the social-media crowd, although beachfront accommodation can be considerably more expensive than hotels in town.

Quinta Margarita Boho Chic Hotel is a highly rated option in Playa del Carmen, located only a few blocks from the beach. With a guest rating of 9.0 from more than 680 reviews, rooms were available for only $54 per night in early December. It provides essentially the same weather as Cancún at a remarkably low price.

Mazatlán is the first of three Pacific Coast destinations on this list. It can be especially convenient for travelers from the western United States and Canada, who may find shorter and less expensive flights than those available to the Caribbean.

Although Mazatlán no longer receives as much international attention as some of Mexico’s newer resort destinations, that may be one reason its hotel prices remain so attractive. The city combines a long beachfront hotel zone with a historic center, local restaurants, and a more traditional Mexican atmosphere.

Mazatlán is a particularly compelling choice for travelers who want to stay directly on the beach without paying luxury-resort prices. It may not have the fashionable reputation of Puerto Vallarta or Los Cabos, but it provides a relaxing coastal vacation at rates that are increasingly difficult to find elsewhere.

The beachfront Varali Grand Hotel had an outstanding 9.2 guest rating from more than 2,600 reviews, yet rooms were available for only $81 per night in early December. Travelers with larger budgets may prefer one of the more polished Pacific destinations later in this list, but Mazatlán is difficult to beat for straightforward beachfront value.

Negril occupies the western end of Jamaica and is best known for Seven Mile Beach, a long stretch of sand lined with hotels, restaurants, bars, and independent businesses. The area is also famous for its spectacular sunsets.

Jamaica has numerous large all-inclusive resorts, including some excellent luxury properties. However, budget and midrange all-inclusive rates are not always as competitive as those in Cancún, Punta Cana, or Puerto Plata. Negril’s smaller beach hotels can offer a more appealing alternative for travelers who are comfortable purchasing meals and drinks separately.

Staying at a smaller property also makes it easier to explore beyond the resort bubble. Local restaurants and bars are mixed among the hotels, giving visitors more opportunities to experience Jamaican food and culture. Vendors and shopkeepers can be persistent, however, so travelers who strongly dislike frequent sales pitches may prefer another destination.

Travellers Beach Resort is one property I can personally recommend because I have stayed there. It sits directly on the beach, has an excellent 9.0 rating from more than 1,000 guest reviews, and was available for $131 per night in early December. Rates rise considerably around Christmas, so early reservations are particularly important for holiday stays.

Caye Caulker is a small island off the coast of Belize where conventional cars are virtually nonexistent. Most visitors explore on foot, by bicycle, or in a golf-cart taxi. The island’s appropriately relaxed motto is “Go Slow.”

Small restaurants, bars, shops, and independently operated hotels are scattered around the island. Caye Caulker has several small beaches and good places to swim, although not every waterfront hotel has a usable beach directly outside. Checking the property’s precise location is important before booking.

The main attractions are diving and snorkeling. The Belize Barrier Reef, part of the world’s second-largest barrier-reef system, is only a short boat ride away. This makes Caye Caulker particularly good value for travelers who would otherwise pay considerably more to stay near a world-class diving destination.

La Isla Resort is a well-reviewed beachfront option with an 8.8 guest rating. Rooms were available for approximately $103 per night in early December. Travelers attracted to Caye Caulker might also consider Roatán, Honduras, which has a similar atmosphere, a larger selection of hotels, and arguably better beaches.

Bocas del Toro is a quirky, developing destination composed of several islands off Panama’s Caribbean coast. Instead of conventional chain resorts, visitors will find small hotels, unusual guesthouses, and several properties with overwater bungalows.

The region has beautiful sandy beaches, although many hotels sit on the water without having a beach directly in front. Bocas del Toro is also one of the Caribbean’s better surfing destinations, with December generally bringing larger swells. Its small restaurants, bars, and unconventional accommodation give it a lively and adventurous atmosphere.

There are two important tradeoffs. Bocas takes more time and effort to reach than most destinations on this list, and December can be very wet—particularly during the first half of the month. Travelers determined to avoid rain should look elsewhere, but those willing to accept uncertain weather may find excellent prices and a destination unlike anywhere else on this list.

Koko Acqua Lodge illustrates the unusual value available here. Beachfront rooms started at approximately $50 per night, while basic overwater bungalows were available for only $105 in early December. That makes Bocas del Toro an intriguing option for travelers who want a distinctive island experience without paying typical overwater-bungalow prices.

The final five destinations are especially well suited to couples seeking a warm December escape without paying luxury-resort prices. Instead of enormous all-inclusive complexes, they offer smaller hotels near the beach, excellent restaurants, attractive surroundings, and plenty of opportunities to explore together.

Each destination combines beaches with something more: a historic town, colorful architecture, spectacular sunsets, secluded coves, or a lively waterfront district. They can be romantic without feeling isolated and affordable without requiring travelers to sacrifice atmosphere, location, or memorable views.

Puerto Vallarta is the second Pacific Coast destination on this list and one of my personal favorites. It offers nearly every type of accommodation, from luxury chain resorts directly on the beach to family-operated hotels in the historic center and stylish boutique properties in the Romantic Zone.

The city’s hotel districts extend for miles north and south of the airport, but the charming historic center remains its heart. Visitors can walk along the Malecón waterfront promenade, explore cobblestone streets, visit galleries and shops, and choose from an enormous variety of restaurants and bars.

This combination makes Puerto Vallarta particularly appealing to couples. It has the convenience and amenities of a major resort destination while retaining considerably more local character than a purpose-built hotel zone. Travelers from the western United States and Canada may also find convenient and reasonably priced flights.

Hotel Porto Allegro is a small property near the Malecón with an exceptional 9.4 rating from more than 1,000 guest reviews. Rooms were available for only $88 per night in early December, making it an excellent base for couples who want to explore the city rather than remain inside a resort.

Barbados sits in the southeastern Caribbean and is particularly popular with European travelers, thanks in part to its relatively convenient flight connections. The island is also known as Rihanna’s home country and for its famous Platinum Coast.

Located along the western side of Barbados, the Platinum Coast contains beautiful beaches, celebrity homes, luxury resorts, and upscale shops. Fortunately, visitors do not need a celebrity-sized budget to enjoy the island. More affordable accommodation can be found along the south coast, particularly in the areas just beyond the capital of Bridgetown.

The south coast combines attractive beaches with smaller hotels, restaurants, shops, and local nightlife. Many coastal properties—and some located on the hills above the water—offer wonderful sunset views. That west-facing orientation can add something memorable to an evening, especially for couples.

Plum Tree Club is a highly rated property within walking distance of the beach. It had an 8.8 guest rating and was available for approximately $115 per night in early December. Other small hotels in the same general area can also provide good value compared with the luxury properties farther north.

Cartagena is one of the most affordable major destinations on the Caribbean coast and one of my favorite cities in the region. It allows visitors to combine two very different vacation experiences within a relatively compact area.

The historic walled city is filled with colorful colonial architecture, boutique hotels, interesting sights, and affordable restaurants. A short taxi ride away, the modern Bocagrande district has high-rise hotels overlooking a long stretch of waterfront. Visitors can stay inside the city walls and travel to the beach during the day or choose a Bocagrande hotel and return to the historic district for sightseeing and dinner.

Cartagena’s beaches do not have the powdery white sand found on some Caribbean islands, but the destination compensates with architecture, culture, dining, and excellent overall value. For couples who enjoy exploring together, it can be far more interesting than spending an entire week inside a conventional beach resort.

Hotel Marie Real Cartagena is a boutique property located within the historic walled city. It had a solid 8.4 guest rating and was available for only $65 per night in early December. At that price, Cartagena can provide a remarkably affordable and romantic combination of city sightseeing and Caribbean waterfront.

Curaçao lies in the southern Caribbean just off the coast of Venezuela. It is one of the ABC islands, along with Aruba and Bonaire, and is generally more affordable than neighboring Aruba. Bonaire can also be a reasonably priced alternative, particularly for divers.

The island has numerous beautiful sandy beaches, although relatively few inexpensive hotels sit directly on them. Many visitors rent a car to explore Curaçao’s secluded coves and smaller beaches, which are scattered along the coast.

Most budget-friendly accommodation is located in or near Willemstad, the colorful capital. Its Dutch-inspired architecture, waterfront restaurants, independent shops, and small casinos allow visitors to combine a tropical vacation with the attractions of a fascinating little city. That variety makes Curaçao especially appealing to couples who want to do more than sit beside the same pool every day.

The Ritz Village Hotel has a large swimming pool and is within walking distance of a beach and central Willemstad. It had an 8.0 guest rating and was available for approximately $101 per night in early December. Travelers willing to stay away from the island’s beachfront resorts can find even less expensive options nearby.

Costa Rica’s Guanacaste region is the final destination on this list. It has become one of Central America’s most popular beach areas, helped by an international airport near Liberia and Costa Rica’s long-established reputation as a welcoming destination for international visitors.

Rather than one large resort city, Guanacaste consists of numerous small towns and former fishing villages. Accommodation ranges from family-operated hotels to luxury chains, wellness retreats, and a handful of all-inclusive resorts. This variety allows couples to choose between a lively beach town and a quiet, secluded escape.

Tamarindo is the main option for travelers who want restaurants, bars, and shops within walking distance. It has a long, west-facing beach known for surfing and beautiful sunsets. Couples seeking a quieter experience can find spa retreats, yoga-focused hotels, and small properties near secluded beaches elsewhere in the region.

Laguna del Cocodrilo is located directly on the beach in Tamarindo and was available for only $87 per night in early December. Its location provides convenient access to the town while still offering the beachfront setting and Pacific sunset views that make Guanacaste such an appealing romantic destination.

The best December destination depends less on finding one universally perfect place and more on choosing the experience that fits your travel style. Cancún and Punta Cana offer enormous resort selections and easy all-inclusive vacations, while Puerto Plata stands out for travelers whose top priority is keeping the total price as low as possible.

Those who prefer smaller hotels and more independent exploration have an even wider range of choices. Playa del Carmen provides a walkable alternative to Cancún, Negril combines local character with a famous beach, and Caye Caulker and Bocas del Toro reward travelers willing to make a little extra effort to reach somewhere distinctive. On the Pacific side, Mazatlán offers particularly impressive beachfront value.

Couples looking for atmosphere as well as warm weather should consider Puerto Vallarta, Barbados, Cartagena, Curaçao, or Guanacaste. Each combines beaches with appealing restaurants, attractive surroundings, and opportunities to explore beyond the hotel. Cartagena is particularly affordable for a city-and-beach trip, while Puerto Vallarta and Guanacaste are excellent choices for Pacific sunsets and consistently popular dining scenes.

Whichever destination you choose, timing can make an enormous difference. Early December often provides some of the year’s best warm-weather hotel values, while prices around Christmas and New Year’s can be twice as high. Compare total prices carefully, read recent hotel reviews, and confirm exactly what is included before booking. With a little flexibility and advance planning, a warm December vacation may cost far less than you expect.
