17 Best Places to Visit in Europe in April 2026

April is one of the most pleasant months to visit Europe, with mild temperatures, spring flowers, and generally smaller crowds than the busy summer season. While most destinations aren’t quite warm enough for classic beach weather yet, the comfortable conditions make it an excellent time for sightseeing in many of the continent’s most famous cities.

Travelers looking for warmer coastal weather can still find it in a few southern destinations such as the Canary Islands or the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Meanwhile, major cities like Paris, Rome, and Barcelona offer great opportunities to explore historic neighborhoods, museums, and outdoor cafés before the peak tourist season begins.

Europe's only two April beach destinations

April can be a wonderful month to visit Europe, but travelers hoping for warm beach weather will quickly discover that most of the continent is still in spring mode. Temperatures in popular destinations like Spain, Italy, and France are usually pleasant for sightseeing but not quite warm enough for swimming.

Fortunately, there are a couple of exceptions where travelers can still find reliably warm sunshine and affordable beach resorts. The Canary Islands and parts of southern Turkey enjoy much milder climates than mainland Europe, making them two of the best places in the region for an early-season beach getaway.

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

  • April avg high: 72F/22C
  • April avg low: 61F/16C
  • April avg precip: 0.6″/1.5cm

Tenerife is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands and one of the few places in Europe where travelers can reliably find warm sunshine throughout the year. Located in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Morocco, the island enjoys a mild climate that makes it a favorite winter and spring escape for Europeans looking to trade gray skies for beach weather.

April is an especially nice time to visit because temperatures are warm but not overly hot, usually in the mid to upper 70s F during the day. Hotel prices are also relatively reasonable compared with many Mediterranean resort areas, and visitors can choose from large beachfront resorts, boutique hotels, and plenty of affordable apartment-style accommodations.

Beyond the beaches, Tenerife offers dramatic volcanic scenery, including Mount Teide National Park, which is home to Spain’s highest peak. Many visitors combine beach time with scenic drives through the island’s rugged landscapes or visits to charming coastal towns.

Hotel prices are often surprisingly affordable as well, especially considering the quality of the large beachfront resorts in the area.

While most of Europe isn’t quite warm enough for beach weather in April, it can be one of the best months of the year for visiting the continent’s famous cities. Spring temperatures are usually mild and comfortable for walking, flowers begin blooming in parks and gardens, and the biggest summer crowds have not yet arrived.

This combination makes April an excellent time to explore historic neighborhoods, museums, and outdoor cafés across many of Europe’s most popular destinations. Spring weather usually brings mild temperatures and blooming trees in many parks and gardens, making it a wonderful time to stroll along the Seine or explore the city’s historic neighborhoods.

The city’s most famous attractions include the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Notre Dame Cathedral, but much of the charm of Paris comes from simply wandering its streets, stopping in small cafés, and enjoying the relaxed pace of daily life. Outdoor terraces begin filling up again in spring, and many visitors find the atmosphere far more enjoyable than during the crowded summer months.

I’ve visited Paris many times and one tip I always recommend for first-time visitors is taking a hop-on hop-off bus tour on your first morning. It’s one of the easiest ways to get oriented and see many of the major sights quickly. Another experience I highly recommend is a Seine River cruise around sunset, when many of the city’s famous landmarks are beautifully lit and the atmosphere feels especially magical.

      John,

I’m not a travel agent so all I can offer is advice. I’d suggest booking a hotel early because they usually triple their prices during Oktoberfest and the cheaper ones book up early. Also, make reservations for the beer tents you want to attend. There are only a few spots each hour for walk-ups. Enjoy your trip and let me know if you have any specific questions. -Roger
