December is hands down the nicest month to visit Bangkok. It’s the driest month of the year, and for once, the heat and humidity aren’t overwhelming. Early December is the sweet spot, with comfortable weather and smaller crowds before the Christmas and New Year’s rush kicks in.
Bangkok offers incredible value, with hotel prices ranging from ultra-budget hostels to luxury high-rises, often at shockingly low rates. It’s also a shopper’s paradise, with endless malls and street markets, and a street food scene that’s as affordable as it is delicious.

Phuket, Thailand

If you’re coming for nightlife, shopping, and a lively atmosphere, Patong Beach is the main hub. It’s crowded and a bit chaotic, but it’s where the action is. For families or travelers looking for a quieter stay, Karon Beach and Kata Beach just to the south are much better choices, offering beautiful beaches with a more relaxed, family-friendly feel.
Phuket has a huge range of accommodation, from simple guesthouses to high-end luxury resorts. December is high season, so it’s essential to book early if you want a beachfront hotel at a reasonable price. Those on tighter budgets might consider staying in Phuket Town, which is cheaper and offers easy access to multiple beaches by public transport or taxi.

What sets Boracay apart is how walkable and relaxed it feels. There’s no main road running through the island — instead, most people get around by strolling the sandy path that runs between the beach and the hotels. Even in peak season, Boracay has a laid-back charm that’s hard to find in more commercialized beach towns.
December is a fantastic time to visit. The rainy season is winding down, so you might get a quick afternoon shower early in the month, but it usually clears up just in time for another stunning sunset. Hotel prices are very reasonable, especially considering how close you’ll be to the beach.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
- December avg high: 87°F/31°C

- December avg precip: 2.2″/5.5cm

December is the best month to visit, as it’s cooler (by Saigon standards) and the rainy season has passed. The slightly milder temperatures and drier weather make it a lot easier to explore the city on foot or by scooter without feeling overwhelmed by the usual heat and humidity.
Saigon offers an exciting mix of history and culture, from the sobering War Remnants Museum and the Cu Chi Tunnels to vibrant markets and French colonial architecture. The food scene here is incredible, with street vendors serving up world-class dishes for just a couple of dollars.
Hotels in Saigon remain a bargain, with excellent mid-range options in District 1 and slightly quieter stays in District 3 for those looking to escape the constant buzz.

Hanoi, Vietnam
- December avg high: 71°F/22°C
- December avg low: 60°F/16°C
- December avg precip: 0.8″/2.0cm

Hanoi might actually be my favorite food city in all of Asia. The French colonial influence is still strong here, but it’s been combined with fresh local ingredients in a way that’s uniquely Vietnamese. Whether it’s a steaming bowl of pho from a street cart or a fresh baguette sandwich for under a dollar, the food is consistently fantastic — and shockingly cheap.
Hotel prices in Hanoi are some of the best values you’ll find anywhere. If you skip the big international chains, you can stay in a spotless, well-run guesthouse with breakfast included for the price of a fast-food meal in most countries. December is also a great time to visit places like Ha Long Bay, with cooler temperatures making boat trips and sightseeing far more pleasant.

Siem Reap, Cambodia
- December avg high: 88°F/31°C
- December avg low: 69°F/21°C
- December avg precip: 0.3″/0.8cm

While Angkor Wat gets all the attention (and rightfully so), Siem Reap itself is a charming little town that most people end up enjoying more than they expected. The city center is filled with lively markets, affordable restaurants, and small boutique hotels that offer excellent value. Even during peak travel weeks, Siem Reap never feels overwhelming, and it’s easy to find quiet corners to relax.
Hotel prices here are among the lowest in Southeast Asia, especially if you visit in early December before the Christmas crowds arrive. You can stay in a comfortable, well-located 3-star hotel for the price of a hostel bunk in other parts of the world.

- 3-star hotels from: US$16 per night for two people
- 4-star hotels from: US$36 per night for two people
Chiang Mai, Thailand
- December avg high: 83°F/28°C
- December avg low: 59°F/15°C
- December avg precip: 0.8″/2.0cm

Unlike Bangkok, Chiang Mai isn’t a visually striking city at first glance. The charm here is more subtle — it’s about the laid-back vibe, the outdoor cafes, and the easy access to nature and adventure activities. The Old City is compact and walkable, making it easy to explore at a relaxed pace without battling constant traffic.
Chiang Mai is still one of the best-value destinations in Asia. You can stay in a decent guesthouse for the price of a dorm bed elsewhere, and even splurging on a boutique hotel feels affordable here. December does get busier as the month goes on, so it’s smart to book early if you’re aiming for a specific property.eople stay here for a month or more because it’s so cheap and pleasant.

Goa, India
- December avg high: 91°F/33°C
- December avg low: 69°F/21°C
- December avg precip: 0.3″/0.8cm

December is the perfect time to visit, with sunny skies, warm temperatures, and a festive vibe that builds as Christmas approaches. The weeks around Christmas and New Year’s are the busiest (and most expensive), so it’s best to visit in early December if you want to enjoy low prices and a more chilled-out atmosphere.
Goa is less about cultural sightseeing and more about slowing down and enjoying the beach life. The sunsets over the Arabian Sea are spectacular, and the beachfront shacks serve up fresh seafood and cheap drinks all day long. Towns like Anjuna and Vagator have a more independent, backpacker-friendly feel, while Calangute is lined with larger package hotels.
Hotel prices in early December are very reasonable, especially if you book outside of the main package tour zones.

Malé, Maldives
- December avg high: 84°F/29°C
- December avg low: 77°F/25°C

But here’s the secret: there are simple, local-run beach resorts and guesthouses near Malé and on nearby islands that you can reach by public ferry. These places offer comfortable rooms, beautiful beaches, and that same crystal-clear water at a fraction of the price of the luxury resorts. If you’re willing to skip the private seaplane transfers and overwater bungalows, the Maldives can actually be surprisingly affordable.
Early December is the sweet spot, where you can still find deals before the Christmas and New Year’s surge kicks in. It’s a perfect option for travelers who want to experience the Maldives without blowing their entire travel budget in a single night.

While mornings and nights can be a bit chilly, the daytime weather is ideal for exploring landmarks like the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and Humayun’s Tomb. Delhi’s chaotic energy isn’t for everyone, but if you dive in with an open mind, it’s an unforgettable experience.
A day trip to the Taj Mahal from Delhi is highly recommended. While you can stay overnight in Agra, the city itself isn’t particularly pleasant, and most travelers are better off visiting the Taj early in the morning and returning to Delhi the same day. The express train or private tours make this an easy and efficient side trip.

Mumbai, India
- December avg high: 90°F/32°C
- December avg low: 65°F/18°C
- December avg precip: 0.0″/0.0cm

December is an ideal time to visit, with warm, dry weather that makes walking tours, market visits, and coastal strolls along Marine Drive far more pleasant than during the humid summer months. You’ll still need to embrace the city’s constant energy and traffic, but the cooler temperatures make it much easier to handle.
Mumbai doesn’t have a single must-see attraction like the Taj Mahal, but it’s the kind of city where the real appeal is in the daily life — from vibrant street markets and art deco theaters to spontaneous cricket games on the beach. It’s also the gateway to Goa, with frequent and affordable flights.
Hotel prices in Mumbai are higher than in Delhi, but you can still find good-value mid-range options if you book early, especially in early December before the domestic holiday season ramps up.

Luang Prabang, Laos
- December avg high: 80°F/27°C
- December avg low: 58°F/14°C
- December avg precip: 0.5″/1.3cm

The town itself is small and easy to navigate, but there are plenty of worthwhile day trips to waterfalls, hilltop temples, and nearby villages. The pace is relaxed, and it’s the kind of place where travelers often stay longer than planned.
Hotel prices in Luang Prabang are excellent value, with boutique guesthouses and small hotels that feel luxurious without the high price tag. December does bring an increase in visitors, but it never feels crowded compared to more mainstream destinations.

Pokhara, Nepal
- December avg high: 63°F/17°C
- December avg low: 41°F/5°C
- December avg precip: 0.4″/1.0cm

December brings cool but pleasant weather, with crisp mornings and sunny afternoons that are perfect for lakeside strolls, café-hopping, or renting a boat on Phewa Lake. If you’re trekking, the clear skies offer some of the best mountain views of the year, though it can get chilly in the higher altitudes.
Pokhara is also one of the best-value destinations in Asia. You can find simple guesthouses for the price of a coffee in other countries, or splurge on a boutique hotel and still spend less than you would at a budget chain hotel elsewhere. December sees an increase in trekkers and travelers, but the vibe remains relaxed and welcoming.

Colombo, Sri Lanka
- December avg high: 87°F/31°C
- December avg low: 73°F/23°C
- December avg precip: 6.9″/17.3cm

Sri Lanka as a whole has always felt like it’s on the verge of a major tourism boom, but for whatever reason, it hasn’t quite happened yet. There’s incredible potential — with beautiful beaches, scenic highlands, and wildlife experiences — but the infrastructure and tourism experience often fall a bit short of expectations. For example, I once booked a safari that looked amazing online, but in person, it felt underwhelming compared to the African safaris it was trying to emulate.
That said, December is an excellent time to explore Sri Lanka’s west coast beach towns, which are an easy drive from Colombo. If you’re heading to places like Galle or Bentota, Colombo makes a logical jumping-off point. Hotels in the city are very affordable, and early December is the best time to avoid the Christmas crowds.

- 4-star hotels from: US$87 per night for two people
Hong Kong
- December avg high: 69°F/21°C
- December avg low: 60°F/16°C
- December avg precip: 1.4″/3.5cm

One thing to be careful about in Hong Kong is accommodation. The city is notorious for its tiny hotel rooms and poorly managed properties, making it one of Asia’s capitals of bad hotel reviews. More than just about anywhere else, it’s crucial to book a hotel with a solid reputation and hundreds of verified reviews — even if it costs a bit more. Otherwise, you risk ending up in a shoebox-sized room with paper-thin walls and service that leaves much to be desired.
Hotel prices remain fairly high year-round, but early December is your best bet for finding deals before the holiday crowds arrive. Hong Kong is a city that rewards those who dive into its neighborhoods, from the street markets of Mong Kok to the trendy cafés of Sheung Wan, so it’s worth investing in a comfortable base.

Taipei, Taiwan
- December avg high: 69°F/21°C
- December avg low: 59°F/15°C
- December avg precip: 3.1″/7.8cm

For those following the news, visiting Taiwan sooner rather than later might be a smart move. There’s an underlying sense that the political situation could become more complicated in the coming years, so if Taipei has been on your radar, now is the time to go.
Hotel prices in Taipei are very reasonable compared to other large Asian cities, and early December is a great time to visit before domestic and regional travelers fill the hotels during the holidays. The city is compact and easy to get around with its efficient metro system, and while it may not have the big headline attractions of other capitals, Taipei’s charm lies in its street life, food culture, and welcoming atmosphere.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Asia in December
If you’re looking for perfect weather, great prices, and fewer crowds, early December is one of the smartest times of year to visit Asia. Many of the destinations on this list offer their best combination of weather and affordability before the Christmas and New Year’s rush sends prices skyrocketing. Flights and hotels are generally much cheaper in the first half of the month, so if your schedule is flexible, you can enjoy a high-season experience without the high-season prices.
For those who are tied to holiday-week travel, it’s even more important to book as early as possible — last-minute deals are rare, and prices climb quickly as availability shrinks.
Whether you’re after a beach holiday, a cultural city trip, or a mix of both, Asia in December has plenty of affordable options that won’t disappoint.
Excellent guide, with some actually useful statistics. It’s nice to come across something that conveys some real content rather than just links to a bunch of third-party sites.
Hi Christian,
I’m planning a trip to SE Asia or the south pacific in Nov/Dec. Do you think Bali/Indonesia will be too wet and rainy? What about Fiji or Tahiti? Any insite on those locations would be great. Also, have you made a trip to see the orangutans in Indonesia? If so, what time of year did you go and do you have any suggestions?
Christina,
The rainy season ends in early December in most of Southeast Asia, but Bali is south of the equator and Decembers there are known for regular downpours that are usually short. I’ve spent two Decembers in Bali and I’d go again because the storms rarely last long and seeking shelter for 20 minutes is usually easy. November has less rainfall in Bali so it’s even better. If you are going in December you’ll find near-perfect weather in Thailand and Vietnam and that whole region.
Tahiti has similar rain patterns to Bali, so November is drier and in December the storms can be intense even though they are usually short. I haven’t been to Fiji but I’d imagine it’s the same. Both of those islands are MUCH more expensive than Bali or anywhere in Southeast Asia, so they are rarely substitutes for each other, for what it’s worth.
I haven’t seen the orangutans in Indonesia so I’m no help with that, unfortunately. I’ve spent years in southeast Asia and I can help you pick a destination if you are still looking around. I hope this helps. -Roger
With Boracay closed, is there somewhere similar that you would suggest with similar beaches and prices? Thanks! Love your site and insight.
Christian,
Boracay Island is scheduled to reopen on October 26, 2018, and the government says the conditions there are much better than they were when they decided to close it down for half a year. Since you are asking about this on a December article I assume this will be good news for you. Palawan is the largest tourist island in the Philippines and the El Nido area is popular there, but I haven’t been there yet myself.
Also, Boracay Island has cheap beer and some other things, but for hotels there are many cheaper beaches and islands in Asia. Let me know if you have any other questions. -Roger
