Dakar is one of Africa’s most-visited cities outside of Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa, and yet it’s still very mysterious.
Cheap hotels are available, but standards for those appear to be rather low, so many travelers will need to pay for 3-star and above places just to feel comfortable.

Dakar’s location out on the Cap-Vert Peninsula keeps its temperatures more moderate than most other African cities in the region. There’s a short rainy season from early July to mid September that provides nearly all the annual rainfall. Otherwise temperatures are warm most days and mild to warm most nights of the year.
