Montevideo doesn’t seem to get too much tourism all on its own, but it is a very popular (and quick) side trip from nearby Buenos Aires. The city may not be too special, but it’s the gateway to many wonderful ranch-stays in the region, and it’s worth a couple days at the very least.
Generally speaking everything in Montevideo is a bit cheaper than it is in Buenos Aires. Most of the main sights and attractions are either free or cheap, so one doesn’t have to spend a fortune once they have a place to sleep.

Montevideo, just like nearby Buenos Aires, has a fairly mild and pleasant climate all year round. Summers, from December through March, are usually warm and fairly humid, but without abundant rainfall. The rest of the year is cooler and less humid, but it almost never freezes or problematically cold.

Hotels in Montevideo usually offer good value, with more expensive places usually having the premium locations. There are also plenty of hostels in the city that offer great value to the backpacking set.
Montevideo hotels have their high season from early December through March, and are particularly busy during January and February when all the locals are on vacation. Better deals are available during the rest of the year, especially at the fancier places and between June and August.
