Recommended Paris hotels and hostels that offer good value

There are over 1,800 hotels in Paris in addition to scores of hostels, and trying to sort through all of them to find a good one would take many hours at the very least. Even then it’s hard to be confident that you’ve decided upon a place that offers good value.

With this in mind we here at Price of Travel have launched a new series of mini hotel and hostel guides where we do the work for you. Instead of 1,800 hotels you’ll find 5 excellent choices below, each with a great location and great guest reviews, plus a price that puts it among the cheaper hotels in its category. There are two hostels as well chosen under the same criteria.

If you are also going to the UK you’ll be interested in our recommended London hotels and hostels picks as well.

Basically, these hotels and hostels all…

  • Are well located
  • Are very good value in their category
  • Receive among the best reviews in their category

We’ve spent many hours going through all the factors to choose the places we’d try to book on our own next trip.

2 Highly recommended Paris hostels

Le Village Hostel

–Cheapest Paris hostel with great reviews–

Pretty much every other Paris hostel in this price range gets scathing reviews, so the Village Hostel stands out as a great choice for those on the lowest of budgets. The location is very good, a short walk to the lively Montmartre district and directly next door to a supermarket, which means that saving additional money by cooking a few of your own meals in the common kitchen couldn’t be easier.

There’s free breakfast and free wi-fi, though the internet service doesn’t seem to work well at all times. There’s also free use of towels and blankets, which isn’t true at many Paris hostels in the lower price ranges. If you are looking for a pleasant hostel at the lowest price possible, the Village Hostel should do the trick.

Le Regent Montmartre

–Cheapest full-service Paris hostel–

12The Le Regent Montmartre is a large hostel with 60 bedrooms with a perfect location in the heart of Montmartre. Of all the long-established hostels in Paris that offer all the usual hostel amenities, this is the cheapest and among the highest rated as well. It’s close to a Metro stop but even closer to the nightlife and all the sights in Montmartre itself.

The Le Regent Montmartre offers free wi-fi in the lobby, plus a kitchen and laundry facilities. There’s also a travel-guide library so guests can easily research their next destinations in comfort. In this price range you usually don’t get a great location or a professional staff like you have at the Le Regent Montmartre, so this is a solid choice for anyone who enjoys a nightlife area.

Best charming Paris area for 3- & 4-star hotels: Rue Cler

RueClerParisRue Cler (Cler Street) is the name of a pedestrianized market shopping lane near the Eiffel Tower, and it’s the general name of the neighborhood surrounding it. The area has a couple dozens hotels that are mostly in the 3-star and 4-star categories. This is not the cheapest hotel neighborhood in Paris, but it might be the best and it’s one of the most central.

Most of the hotels are within a 10 to 15 minute walk of the base of the Eiffel Tower, and some even have tower views from the rooms. The whole neighborhood is lovely and much less hectic than the popular tourist areas just across the river. Seriously, if you can afford to stay in this neighborhood, you’ll love it and find it very convenient.

Recommended Rue Cler hotel: Hotel Cler – 3*

–Reasonably priced, renovated in 2016, and right on Rue Cler–

ClerHotelI stayed at this hotel in August of 2016 and the review scores were so high that I was suspicious. But this newly-renovated hotel DOES live up to the hype, and I highly recommend it. The location could not be better, as it’s right on the pedestrian street lined with restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, and supermarkets.

The rooms are small, just like every other hotel anywhere near central Paris, but the beds and furnishings are unusually nice. The staff are excellent and speak fluent enough English to help with anything, which isn’t true for all hotels in Paris. The breakfast buffet costs an additional €12 per person, and is the best breakfast buffet I’ve ever had in Europe.

5 More highly recommended Paris hotels

Note: Hotel “starting at” prices listed below were the cheapest I could find for each hotel, usually for a single room. It’s likely your dates will show higher prices, especially for a double room, but this doesn’t mean it’s not a great deal. Please compare prices you are quoted to prices of similar hotels and you’ll usually find that these are bargains.

Hôtel de la Porte Dorée – 2*

–Very cheap yet nice hotel southeast of the center–

ean-344812-3529708_99_b-imageLocated in a quiet neighborhood a bit to the southeast of the tourist center, the Hotel de la Porte Doree is a clean and well-run 2-star hotel that offers excellent value to budget travelers. The interior and the rooms are all decorated with care so it has the appearance of a boutique hotel, with amazingly low prices that make it affordable even to backpackers.

Rooms are small and there is no wi-fi or international channels on the small televisions, but for the price you’ll be very happy that it’s as tidy and well-kept as it is. The Porte Doree Metro station is literally a few steps away, so you can be anywhere in Paris in 30 minutes or so. This location isn’t ideal for those who speak no French at all as it’s not a very touristy neighborhood, but for the price it’s worth a look for any traveler on a lower budget.

Le Fabe Hotel – 3*

–Quiet and central location on the Left Bank–

1001a3b0-5659a74dFeaturing only 17 rooms, each with a name rather than a number, the Le Fabe is a boutique hotel with a great location on the Left Bank side of things, which should make it appealing for younger and more creative guests. The rooms are considered large (for Paris) and each comes fully equipped with a minibar, flatscreen satellite TV, a safe, double-glazed windows, and free wi-fi.

The entire hotel is kept spotless, and the helpful staff get very high marks from almost all past guests, making the Le Fabe one of the best-reviewed hotels in all of Paris. A busy and large business hotel can mean getting personalized recommendations in English can be challenging or impossible, but the staff here have time for every guest. The room rates are fantastic considering how popular the hotel is. If you are looking for a very nice hotel in this part of Paris, this one can’t be beat at the price.

Hotel de Varenne – 3.5*

–Very comfortable and affordable 3.5-star near the Eiffel Tower–

leonardo-1244561-63581_Garden_S-imageWith only 25 rooms and famously comfortable beds, the Hotel de Varenne has an excellent location that helps keep it in the Top 10 in guest reviews of the over 1,800 hotels in the city. Situated on a quiet block within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower, this hotel is also very close to several Metro stations, but also close to Place Concord at the end of the Champs Elysees shopping street.

The staff here is also notoriously helpful and can point guests in the direction of cafes and shops that most tourists would otherwise miss. Each room comes equipped with a minibar, Louis XVI decor, an LCD TV, a safe, and a desk. Read the online reviews and you’ll discover that this is a hotel that people find and then keep returning to, which says a lot in a city like Paris. The room rates are very reasonable considering its popularity, though booking well in advance is often necessary.

Hôtel Regent’s Garden – 4*

–Great value boutique hotel in a historic mansion–

leonardo-1057776-facade_93084_S-imageFormerly this was part of the Best Western “Premier” division that consists of high-end city hotels. This one – centrally located near the Palais des Congrès, the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Élysées – is extremely popular and one of their finest hotels anywhere. The rooms are typically small as with virtually every Paris hotel, but there’s free wi-fi, free cold drinks in the mini-bar, and great attention to detail.

Reviewers rate this as one of the absolute best-value hotels in all of Paris. Great online rates (especially for early bookings) put it alongside run-down 3-star hotels, but this is 4-star luxury for the same price. This is a no-smoking hotel that is also close to transportation connections so it’s a great choice for many.

Les Jardins de la Villa Hotel – 4*

–Popular and trendy boutique hotel near Arc de Triomphe–

leonardo-1194197-les_jardins_de_la_villa-apicius-facade-bielsa-05_bd_S-imageIf you are looking for a boutique hotel that offers excellent service combined with a very convenient location and surprisingly good rates, the Les Jardins de la Villa Hotel is for you. This 33-room hotel has free wi-fi and is on a quiet side street very near the Palais des Congrès, so it’s a very popular hotel with business travelers as well.

Previous guests simply rave about this place, from the guest rooms to the breakfast service to the location within walking distance of the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Élysées. It’s also only one block from a Metro station as well as a RER station, so transportation couldn’t be easier. When there’s no business event in town they also offer very good rates considering the popularity.

Julie Chambers says:

How can you say that the Hotel de la Porte Doree is in Montmartre? It could not be further! It is in the southeast, and Montmartre is way up north.

    Julie,

It was an editing error so thank you for pointing it out, and I’m sorry if it caused you any confusion. It has been fixed. -Roger
