If you do Halong Bay in one day then you’ll be spending at least half your time on the bus, which makes for a long day, so an overnight stay is much better. Of course, if your options are to either do Halong Bay in one day or skip it altogether, do it in one day. It truly is a spectacular thing to see and you will see most of it in your day trip.

I’ll be in Hanoi on a really tight schedule, a day trip would fit in much better for me. I could do without the kayaking and swimming – from your experience is there much I’d be missing out on though?

Thanks at ton for this! Really good blow by blow trip. I had been scratching my head over this HaLong thing for over a week, and was just about to fork out $85 for a trip over the net just to be rid of the hassle and confusion. But then I saw your link on TravelFish. You just saved me over $30 mate!
